Early Intervention ABA Therapy in Overland Park
If You Just Got a Diagnosis, This Page Is for You
A diagnosis often comes with a stack of paperwork, a list of next steps, and a mix of emotions. The good news is that you don't have to have everything figured out before taking the next step. When you're ready, we're here to help guide the way. The Behavior Project provides early intervention ABA therapy for children and families in Overland Park.
What Early Intervention ABA Therapy Actually Is
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is an evidence-based approach that helps us understand how children learn and develop new skills. By applying principles of learning and behavior, ABA focuses on teaching skills that support communication, independence, social connection, and participation in everyday life.
Early intervention refers to beginning therapy during the early childhood years, when children are especially receptive to learning. During this time, children are building the foundational abilities that support language, play, social interaction, and daily routines.
Children can benefit from ABA at many ages, but starting earlier provides more opportunities to build these skills during a period of significant growth and development. It also gives children more time to practice and use new skills across different environments before the demands of school and social settings become more complex.
It brought me to tears seeing what was happening at the Behavior Project. The learning, caring, growing...just a miracle! I cannot express what a service this place is providing for our little ones. Blessings to you all at the Behavior Project!

A Clinic That Feels Nothing Like a Clinic
Walk into any of The Behavior Project’s locations and you’ll notice right away that it doesn’t feel like a traditional therapy office. Each clinic is designed like a little village, with dedicated spaces that help children learn and practice skills in natural, engaging ways.
Our therapists are trained to be play partners who create thoughtful opportunities for growth within activities your child already enjoys. Many families come in expecting therapy to feel clinical or rigid, and instead find children playing, learning, connecting, and genuinely excited to be there.
The Behavior Project is one of the few
ABA therapy clinics in the Kansas City area that is both BHCOE-accredited and BCBA-D led.
Your Are Part of the Therapy, Not Just An Observer
Parent support is a core part of every program at The Behavior Project. Your involvement matters, and our team works alongside you from the very beginning to help you feel confident supporting your child's growth.
Through regular
parent support meetings, your child's Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) will help you understand the principles behind what is happening during therapy sessions and show you how those same strategies can be incorporated into everyday life. Often, the most powerful learning opportunities happen in the small moments that make up a day, whether that is during mealtime, playtime, bedtime routines, or transitions.
Parent support meetings are scheduled regularly so you always understand your child's current goals, recent successes, and next steps. As one family shared, The Behavior Project focused on "keeping us in the loop, involving us in our son's care, and giving us actionable advice on how to support him at home.
We also collaborate closely with the other professionals involved in your child's care, including:
- Speech-language pathologists
- Occupational therapists
- Physical therapists
- School teams
- Other specialists
Frequently Asked Questions
What age should a child start early intervention ABA?
Children can begin ABA therapy as soon as they receive an autism diagnosis. Research consistently supports early intervention because it helps children build foundational communication, social, play, and daily living skills during an important stage of development. When support is introduced early, children have more opportunities to learn and practice these skills in natural, everyday situations. Early intervention can help foster greater independence, reduce barriers to learning, and create a strong foundation for long-term growth and success.
Does insurance cover early intervention ABA?
Early Intervention ABA is covered by most major insurance plans. Before services begin, our team will verify your benefits and walk you through your coverage so you have a clear understanding of any costs and can move forward with confidence
How many hours per week will my child need?
Every child is different, so there is no one-size-fits-all recommendation. After a comprehensive assessment, a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) will recommend a therapy schedule based on your child's individual strengths, needs, developmental skills, and family priorities. Our recommendations are guided by medical necessity and current clinical evidence and are reviewed regularly to ensure your child continues to receive the appropriate level of support.
What credentials should I look for in an ABA provider?
Look for a provider that prioritizes quality over convenience. Your child's therapy should be developed and supervised by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), delivered by well-trained Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs), and regularly reviewed to ensure meaningful progress. It's also worth asking about staff training, parent involvement, clinical oversight, and whether the organization has earned national accreditation.
The Behavior Project is led by a doctoral-level Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA-D) and is nationally accredited by BHCOE. We specialize exclusively in early intervention, use a naturalistic, evidence-based approach to ABA, and believe parents are essential partners in every child's progress.
Is center-based or in-home ABA better for young children?
Both clinic-based and home-based therapy can be effective, and the best fit depends on your child's needs and goals.
One advantage of clinic-based therapy is access to a highly structured environment designed specifically for learning. Our clinics provide more opportunities to practice skills across a variety of settings, activities, and social situations than are typically available in the home. Children also benefit from natural peer interactions and opportunities for social skills progress.
In addition, clinic-based care allows for greater collaboration among BCBAs, therapists, and other team members, ensuring consistent support, shared expertise, and real-time adjustments to each child's programming.
What is the difference between early intervention ABA and the state's early intervention program (Infant Toddler Services)?
Infant Toddler Services (ITS) is Kansas's statewide early intervention program for children from birth to age three with developmental delays or disabilities. Depending on a child's needs, ITS may provide services such as speech, occupational, or physical therapy, developmental education, and family support.
ABA therapy is a specialized, evidence-based intervention for children with autism that focuses on building communication, social, play, and adaptive skills through individualized teaching strategies. Because the two programs have different goals and areas of expertise, many children benefit from receiving both services simultaneously.
Will ABA therapy change my child's personality?
Modern, evidence-based ABA is about building skills that give your child more ways to communicate, connect, and navigate the world. At The Behavior Project, the goal is to help each child become more of who they already are. One parent described their son as making "leaps and bounds in his development" while "staying completely true to his personality," and that balance is something the team works toward intentionally every day.
